Quick notes: Färjestad finished the regular season undefeated. They are the only team to have done so this season. To pull this off, they defeated Storhamar Hamar 3-0 in the final match.
To get into the playoffs, Pinguins Bremerhaven had to get one point in their final match against SHL champions Skellefteå. They did so, losing in overtime, 3-2.
Tappara Tampere won the CHL in the 2022-23 season but missed the playoffs last year. They needed to win their last match to guarantee a spot in the playoffs but failed to do so. Instead, they lost 2-0 to Lausanne HC. But, as you can see, they made the playoffs anyway due to some help in other games.
The surprise of the season, the Sheffield Steelers, continued surprising everyone as they defeated powerhouse Dynamo Pardubice, 3-2, in a seven-round shootout to make the playoffs for the first time ever. Meanwhile, Dynamo Pardubice has surprisingly missed the playoffs.

Macklin Celebrini only took 7:01 in his first NHL game to score his first goal. That is the second-fastest to score a first NHL goal by a first-overall pick. The fastest was Mario Lemieux, just 2:59 into his first game. Celebrini would follow the goal up shortly with an assist.
Unfortunately for him and the Sharks, that’s where the good news ended. He is now out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Sidney Crosby and Evengi Malkin have been busy hitting milestones. On the 11th, Malkin got his 800th assist, making him the 34th player to do so and the 3rd active player to do so. The other two active players who have achieved that milestone were also playing in that game: Sidney Crosby and Patrick Kane. Then, on the 16th, Crosby got two assists to get 1,600 points and Malkin scored his 500th goal. Crosby is the fifth fastest to the 1,600-point milestone, just behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Marcel Dionne, and Jaromir Jagr.
Florida Panthers Captain Aleksander Barkov is out 2-3 weeks with a lower-body injury.
Here’s something you probably haven’t seen: a team pulling the goalie in the first period. That’s exactly what the Winnipeg Jets (who as of writing, are the only remaining undefeated team in the league) did against the Minnesota Wild. There were 2.9 seconds left, there was a faceoff in the Wild zone, and the Jets had Hellebuyck sitting on the bench for it. The gambit paid off as the Jets would score thanks to Mark Scheifele.
New Jersey Devils goaltender Jake Allen is the first goaltender in NHL history to beat 33 different franchises.
Alex Ovechkin has become the sixth player in NHL history to have 700 goals and assists. The only others to do this are Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jaromir Jagr, Marcel Dionne, and Phil Esposito.
Filip Gustavsson scored a goalie goal against the St. Louis Blues on the 15th. He is the 15th goaltender to score a goal in NHL history.
Matvei Michkov scored not only his first but also his second NHL goal on the 16th. He scored both in a span of just under five minutes in the first period in a match against the Edmonton Oilers.
The Dallas Stars and goaltender Jake Oettinger have agreed to an eight-year contract extension worth $8.25 million a year.

The Hockey Unterland Cavaliers, who had been at the bottom of the league, were the ones who put an end to the “Sisak Express”. KHL Sisak, the newest club in the league, had been on a winning streak, but that ended on the 12th when they would lose 5-4 in overtime.
On the 17th, the two top teams in the league, EC Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel (who was in the top position) and the Red Bull Hockey Juniors (who were second in the league by one point) faced off against each other. In the end, Kitzbühel would win in a blowout, 6-1, to create some padding between them and Red Bull.
Auroraliiga
HPK defeated league leaders Tampere twice in a row. First, they won in Tampere 3-2 in overtime, then won at home, 5-2. Barbora Juříčková was the team’s top scorer in those two matches with two goals and three assists. One of those goals was the game-winner in overtime in the first match.

The league’s newest team, Hokiklub Budapest, took on the defending champions, ECDC Memmingen Indians in a back-to-back series. In game one, Memmingen would win 3-1. They had two goals in the first 26 minutes and it took nine more minutes for Budapest to respond. The next day, the same score was the result: 3-1, but there was a different winner. Budapest did get revenge. Memmingen’s sole goal was a short-handed one by Nara Elia.
Deutsche Eishockey Liga
ERC Ingolstadt’s Mathew Bodie was given an eight-game suspension after spitting after a fight with a Grizzlys Wolfsburg player. He could’ve been suspended for up to 32 games, but the league decided the minimum eight games was enough.
Speaking of ERC Ingolstadt, their nine-game win streak came to an end on the 18th when they lost to the Nürnberg Ice Tigers, 6-2.
EHC Red Bull Munich fired head coach Toni Söderholm and Max Kaltenhauser will take over as interim head coach. Kaltenhauser had been serving as an assistant coach.
Elite Ice Hockey League
While the Sheffield Steelers are shocking the world over in the Champions Hockey League, it’s been less rosy for them in their domestic league. They lost to the Manchester Storm 4-3 in a shootout and then lost to the Coventry Blaze, 4-2. That said, in their most recent game (as of writing this), they did beat Glasgow 6-3.
The Blaze’s victory over the Steelers was the first time since September 2018 that they have beaten the Steelers at home and in regulation.
Speaking of the Coventry Blaze, they are the only remaining undefeated team in the league (as of writing this).
Meanwhile, the Cardiff Devils remain the top team in the league, and as of writing, are six points clear of any competition.
But, things aren’t as great in the Challenge Cup for the Devils, as they lost to the Nottingham Panthers, who are now four points above any competition in Challenge Cup Group A standings.
European Women’s Hockey League
MAC Budapest is no longer undefeated after losing 8-4 to the Sabres St. Pölten.
ICE Hockey League
The top two teams in the league, HCB Südtirol Alperia, and the Moser Medical Graz99ers, faced off against each other last week. In the end, it was HCB Südtirol Alperia who won, 3-2, and have taken possession of the top spot in the standings.

At age 46, Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana of Thailand made her professional hockey debut. This happened during an exhibition match between Thailand and China to celebrate the 6th cycle birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand and the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The final score was 6-6. Before the match, Her Majesty was presented with an honorary award by the IIHF for being the first IIHF Women’s Global Ambassador. She was given a certificate, pin, and trophy.
In another step towards 3x3 hockey being recognized as an Olympic sport, it has been announced that the IIHF will host a women’s 3x3 tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The tournament will take place between November 7-13. The ice rink will be smaller, using a 26x18m rink instead of the traditional 60x30m one. The countries that will be participating are: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Iran. Brazil will have two teams in the tournament.
Kontinental Hockey League
KHL World Games have returned this season and it’s been announced that on December 22, a match between Dinamo Minsk and Spartak will take place in Uzbekistan.
Evgeny Kuznetsov returned sooner than he expected, only being out for a few weeks. Unfortunately for him, his return was overshadowed by Dinamo and Vadim Shipachyov, who was also returning from injury. Shipachyov scored for his team and Dinamo would win 4-2.
For the first time ever, Kunlun has won in Cherepovets, doing so by a score of 3-0. This was also their first win over the Cherepovets based team since 2017.
SKA forward Sergei Plotnikov became the fourth player in KHL history to reach 900 games played in the league. Meanwhile, Sergei Shirokov reached his 1,000th game in Russia’s top league, but not 1,000 in the KHL. He started before the KHL began and spent some time in North America. While Shirokov hasn’t played 1,000 KHL games, Vadim Shipachyov reached the 1,000 KHL milestone a few days later. He is the second player to ever do it. The first was Evgeny Biryukov who did so last season. Shipachyov has played in every season of the KHL’s existence (starting in 2008-09).
The most recent SKA vs. CSKA match was a classic. SKA took a 2-0 lead not even 15 minutes in (Kuznetsov with the primary assist on both goals), but it took less than nine minutes for CSKA to tie the match up. SKA would once again take a two-goal lead, going up 4-2 with Arseny Gritsyuk scoring the first and assisting on the second. Once again, CSKA would tie the match, forcing overtime. Just two and a half minutes into overtime, though, Carolina Hurricanes prospect, Alexander Nikishin, would score the game-winner for SKA. Final score: 5-4.
Alleged rapist Michael McLeod has had his contract terminated by Barys Astana. It’s due to them getting a new president who wants to focus on Kazakhstan-born talent (the franchise is located in Kazakhstan, not Russia, the KHL is a European and Asian league, not just Russian) instead of imported talent.
On the legal side of things, Michal Kristof, who is under a legal contract with Sochi, left the team to go play for SCL Tigers in the Swiss National League. As pointed out by the KHL in a statement, this is a blatantly illegal move:
“The IIHF’s international transfer regulations state that all IIHF members, their leagues and clubs must respect valid player contracts playing for all organizations, regardless of whether they are IIHF members (section 8.1 of the IIHF transfer regulations). Thus, all IIHF members – leagues and clubs – must respect player contracts with the KHL, even though the KHL is not an IIHF member.”
Metal Ligaen
A lot of player movement has happened since the last article. Here’s a brief recap of what happened:
Defender Oliver Dahlmann signed a 2-year contract with Rungsted Seier Capital.
Forward Søren Dietz-Larsen asked to be released from his contract with SønderjyskE.
Forward Cam Brown signed a short-term contract with SønderjyskE that lasts until the new year.
Forward Otto Kröger’s short-term contract with SønderjyskE has been canceled.
Blake Bennett and the Odense Bulldogs have mutually parted ways after some disagreement with each other.
Forward Luka Burzan signed a contract with the Odense Bulldogs that will last through the rest of the season.
Forward Marcus Almquist and the Herning Blue Fox came to a mutual agreement to terminate their contract. He would then go and sign a contract with Rødovre.
The Frederikshavn White Hawks lost 8-1 to the Odense Bulldogs on the 14th. Odense had a 4-0 lead going into the second period. This match clearly lit a fire underneath the White Hawks as they would go on to defeat Rungsted in overtime, 3-2, in their next match. They nearly lost, though, as they had a 2-0 lead but allowed Rungsted to score twice in the final four minutes of regulation.
Rungsted and Rødovre are rivals but now they are teaming together to stop fan unrest. In the last few matches, there’s been a good amount of trouble outside the actual play on the ice. Using DeepL Translator, which may not be entirely accurate, an article from the league’s website says this: “Not least at the recent game in Rødovre, there were unpleasant disturbances with pyrotechnics being thrown, fights and trouble.” They have watched videos and have had discussions with each other and imposed punishment on the fans who caused the unrest. They will continue to work together to ensure fans behave during these matches.

Swedish Women's Hockey League
As of writing, the SDHL has a new league leader: Luleå. They achieved this when they beat Linköping 2-0. Previously Frölunda had been the league leader, though Frölunda does have a game in hand.
Speaking of Frölunda: they were on an eight-game winning streak but had it snapped by MoDo when they lost 4-3.
